OUR PURPOSE

A child’s formative years present the best window of opportunity to secure good outcomes later in life. Many young children in South Africa do not have access to the nutrition, health, education and social protection components they need to reach their development potential. Which is why we started the FLOW Foundation. FLOW stands for Faith. Love. Opportunity. Wisdom. Our mission is to help develop self-sustaining early child development (ECD) centres that provide the foundation for resilient, stable and healthy children.

Who We Are

DAVID LOEBENSTEIN

My passion and why I joined the Flow foundation, is a result of being a primary school teacher, for a 5 year period before entering the business world. I’m passionate about our country, creating a better future for the vulnerable children of South Africa.

As a board member of Flow Foundation, it gives me great joy in seeing how we are physically making a difference and am so proud of our Flagship, project Sunbeam, which was our 1st creche build in the Westlake Township.

JANE WORTHINGTON-FITNUM

After graduating from Rhodes with a B Journ degree, Jane joined the SA Navy. She left with the rank of Lieutenant to take up a position in media relations, with Owen Wiggens Trust and then Old Mutual. After several years of consulting while raising her three sons, Jane joined HWB Communications, where she became acquainted with the NGO sector. She was Ops Manager at New World Foundation in Lavender Hill five years, and spent five years with Philani Maternal, Child, Health and Nutrition Project based in Khayelitsha as the Educare Coordinator. Here she saw first-hand the importance of early childhood development on the future prosperity of the whole community.

CURRENT PROJECTS

01.

sunbeam project

The Sunbeam Pre-School in an informal settlement in Westlake is facing closure due to the owners not being able to meet the Department of Social Development’s health and safety standards. The area, know as Westlake Village, was originally zoned for 700 low cost houses with no more than 3000 people now has over 1900 informal dwellings and more than 12500 (over 900 under age 13) people living in a very densely populated area. Drug and alcohol abuse is rife and is a leading cause of children born with learning disabilities. The average age children drop out of school is 14. There are 17 pre-schools in Westlake Village with a total of 548 children in their care – only 2 of these are government approved Early Development Centres. Sunbeam pre-school is owned by Shanel and Priscilla Mamtambo – two incredible, inspiring women who often waiver the day care fees for parents who cannot afford to send their children to day care just to ensure children are kept off the street and safe. Currently, 39 children are cared for in this facility.

UPCOMING EVENTS /campaigns

BRANDED MASK INITIATIVE

All proceeds from the sale of the masks will be utilized to provide care and essential items to the children in the communities that we service. Our cycle strives to keep the flow of funds within the communities and sectors that need it most. By partnering with government organisations and departments, the funds that are allocated towards these purchases will be funneled into the CMT industry which has been massively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions. The Flow Foundation will then distribute the returns to the children, our most deserving beneficiaries.
We wish for this transaction to serve as many people as possible. Educators and learners will receive the much needed protection, the livelihoods of those with the skills to produce the masks will be supplemented, the children in vulnerable communities will receive the benefits of the transaction, and the limited governmental funds will stretch as far as it can with all these additional advantages.
